The sounding rockets are uncontrollable liquid fueled rockets which may feature solid rocket motors to boost them up to speed.
They are often spin stabilised, meaning the rotation caused by small fins near the bottom help to keep the rocket pointing upwards.
Their purpose was to record data about atmospheric pressure and to reach suborbital altitudes.
